Movies About Saints

Filmmakers have created several movies about saints, many of which are modern day saints.  Here are a few that are worth seeing.

The Song of Bernadette is about a French girl, Bernadette Soubirous, who in 1858 was visited by The Virgin Mary. The actress playing St. Bernadette, Jennfer Jones, won an Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in this film in 1943.

The Passion of Joan of Arc is a silent French film, produced in 1928, that was not rediscovered until the 1980s. The movie is based on the actual records of the trail and execution of the 15th-century young female saint who had visions of holy persons who led her to assist the French in becoming independent of England at the end of the Hundred Years War. Many consider the film a masterpiece of early cinematography and acting on the part of the lead, Renée Jeanne Falconetti.

St. Anthony: The Miracle Worker of Padua, a film about the 12th century St. Anthony of Padua, is an Italian film with English subtitles that premiered in 2002. The story focuses upon the conversion of the saint and his turn to the simple life.

The Reluctant Saint, produced in 1962, is a film about St. Joseph Cupertino, a 17th-century Franciscan monk who was not terribly intelligent, but who levitated and had visions.
